Ethiris VMS 7.2 – Reliability to rely on

Launch of Ethiris VMS 7.2 and Ethiris NVR 7.2

Version 7.2 of Ethiris contains new possibilities as well as enhancements of existing features. There is a completely new support for ONVIF I/O. Reliability is important in all systems, now we have taken Ethiris to an even higher level. It’s foremost about video storage and when running Ethiris as a cluster. The motion detection function has been improved by a brand new noise reduction algorithm and new diagnostic when configuring motion detection. Read more about this and more news below.

ONVIF I/O

To be able to utilize digital inputs and outputs via cameras can be an important part of a video surveillance system. Since before, Ethiris has had support for I/O via various cameras’ proprietary communication protocols. Now we expand the possibility to use I/O by also supporting this for cameras connected to Ethiris via ONVIF.

Note that only part of the expected functionality for I/O is specified in ONVIF Profile S. Therefore the actual functionality may vary between different camera brands. The activation of outputs is specified in ONVIF Profile S and has been working just fine for all the various camera brands we have tested. The monitoring of inputs, however, is not specified and hence may not work as expected depending on how the camera manufacturer has implemented the support.

Enhanced motion detection

A reliable motion detection is an essential part of a VMS. We have added the possibility to use noise reduction in 9 steps, “None” – “Max”. Noise reduction is especially useful for high resolution cameras since images from these contain more noise compared to images with lower resolution.

When setting up sensitivity and other parameters for motion detection, such as the noise reduction level, pixels with motion are displayed in different colors to help the user to understand how the detection is affected by different settings. This indication has been made clearer in version 7.2 where pixels that are discarded by the noise reduction algorithm are displayed in yellow.

More efficient alarm list

The operator’s work has to be as efficient as possible to be able to execute all required tasks. In the new Ethiris the operator can double-click an alarm in the alarm list to go directly to live and automatically show cameras associated to the alarm. Another possibility is to right-click an alarm in the alarm list to display a popup menu and be able to choose to show the associated cameras in live, the Player or to show alarm instructions and possibly a web page associated with the alarm.

Higher quality in scaled images

A new setting in Ethiris Client provides the possibility to determine what type of scaling to use in the client and thus determine to prioritize performance or quality. You can choose from three alternatives; Performance, Balanced and Quality.

Extended support for external storage such as NAS

In Ethiris you can select internal video storage on local hard disks as well as external video storage on for example a NAS or a shared resource on another server. In version 7.2 of Ethiris you can enter username and password for access to an external storage device. This means that you no longer have to run Ethiris Server under a specific user account with permission to access the storage device, but you can run Ethiris Server under the default ‘Local System Account’.

Even higher reliability

Sometimes unexpected events occur such as power failure or network disruptions in a system. In worst case this will result in corrupt video files. Now, Ethiris is far more tolerant if this should happen and might even, in some cases, automatically save content from a corrupt video file.

A new setting has been introduced to be able to handle short network disruptions when running an Ethiris Cluster. The idea is to set a delay before the cluster takes action upon a member server failure. In that way you can avoid unnecessary moving of cameras between member servers and get a more stable cluster.

Built-in Teamviewer Quicksupport

Anyone can get problems with a system that you can’t solve on your own. Then it’s reassuring to know that Teamviewer Quicksupport is built-in to Ethiris Admin and Ethiris Client. As long as an Internet connection to the computer exists, just click Quicksupport in the Help menu and contact Kentima support to get quick and professional help provided you have a support agreement with Kentima.

New script features

Script, as everybody knows, is the road to a true intelligent surveillance system. Now, we have enhanced the Process object by being able to specify the current directory when creating a new process. Furthermore, there is a new function, ‘ProcessRunning’, that can be used for finding out whether a process with a certain name is running in the computer.

Other news
As if all above wasn’t enough there are several other important news in Ethiris VMS 7.2.

For example…
  • Reduced jitter in live video, especially if Ethiris Server runs on a computer with limited performance.

  • Possibility to convert the settings in the panel ‘Recording’ to script. The purpose is to not having to enter the script manually should you need more advanced recording conditions than those provided via the simplified Recording panel.

  • Support for up to 128 buttons on a joystick connected
