OE511 - a Panel PC you can count on
TIVA AB offers the most reliable fish counting solution avaliable. They have long experience in assembling, operating, developing, and manufacturing fish counters and underwater cameras. The primary purpose of investing in a fish counter is environmental monitoring. With OE511 Panel PC from Kentima, high-quality data can be delivered rapidly around the clock.
With specialists in system development and environmental technology, the Kalmar-based technology company TIVA has long experience in assembling, operating, developing, and manufacturing fish counting solutions and underwater cameras. With innovative solutions connected to water, they deliver based on their core principles: Quality, Simplicity, and Reliability. They have supplied fish counters to several power plants, hydropower associations, county administrative boards, municipalities, universities, and consulting firms across Sweden. The purpose of investing in a fish counting solution is to easily monitor underwater environments, including tracking fish migration, which is achieved through underwater cameras, 3D camera technology, and image recognition algorithms.
"Given the demanding environment, it is essential to have a Panel PC that is both robust and extremely reliable in terms of performance, despite temperature variations, and with brightness levels fully sufficient for outdoor use. All of this is provided in the OE511 from Kentima”, says Stefan Kläppe, CEO & Technical Manager, TIVA AB
TIVA evaluated different Panel PC options for their appliance cabinets before selecting Kentima, with products both developed and manufactured in Sweden. Initially, TIVA ordered two panels for testing, and after very positive results, OE511 from Kentima became their chosen Panel PC. The panels are now installed in appliance cabinets on land, near the fish counter, where users can view live images, control lighting, and download data. The brightness is fully sufficient for outdoor use.
OE511 from Kentima is a passively cooled industrial computer with no moving parts, i.e. no fans or moving storage media. It features a high resolution and durable touch glass with high precision. All this ensures that the units can withstand tough handling and have a long lifespan. The installations are partially powered by solar panels to make the solution as energy efficient as possible.
The solution is designed to be simple. The fish swim through a tunnel where they are automatically counted, and species are identified. Their size is measured using a 3D camera. The analysis of the camera streams is done in real-time with specifically trained algorithms, a technology that TIVA exclusively uses.
There are currently around 50 installations across the country. In Sweden, there are 2,000 hydropower plants or regulation dams, of which only about 100 have fish passages. As operations are being adapted for environmental sustainability, many new fish passages will need to be built, and fish counters are the perfect tool for follow-up on these actions.
