Safe Learning Environment with Ethiris

Umeå University is the workplace for 4,300 employees and the seat of learning for 34,000 students from all over the world. Their mission includes creating a safe work and study environment where security always is a priority. With Ethiris Video Management Software from Kentima they have overview and can easily monitor the university campus.

The project began after Umeå University had problems with recurrent vandalism, graffiti and other damage. The need for video surveillance has grown gradually and today they use cameras at a number of places, including two of the university’s high-security objects.

One of Ethiris’ great strengths is that the software is versatile and flexible. That has been an important part of the work designing the system at Umeå University as it is easy to connect for example cameras of different brands. The operators also appreciate that it is very easy to adapt the system to their specific requirements and needs.

”Kentima is a company of substance and they have quality products. You are not ’locked’ into a specific product selection in the second stage,” says Jörgen Sandström, Security Manager Umeå University.

 
The facility extends over a large area with several buildings. Besides the operators, a large number of guards use the video surveillance system. This places high demands on communication and thus an important function in Ethiris is the possibility to send images over email so that all users are updated when something happens.

The scalability of the software means that the capacity of the system can be increased seamlessly. The license model of Ethiris is to only pay

for the functionality required by the system through license level and number of cameras. That way you never pay for more than you need and the system becomes very cost-effective.

”The security cost has been kept at previous levels despite a large increase in safety area,” says Jörgen Sandström.

 
Umeå University is very satisfied with Ethiris and expect that the facility will further expand in the future, which is a good rating. Today, the system is closed, but there are plans to connect Ethiris to their access control and intruder alarm system to create a total security solution.
