Safer way ahead with WideQuick and H316
Trafiksystem Väst AB has delivered a modern and reliable wind warning solution to the Swedish Trafikverket. The solution has been implemented on the 48-metre-high Ödsmåls bridge in Bohuslän, an area that is often exposed to severe weather. WideQuick HMI Panel is central to the solution, providing road users with important information about wind conditions on the bridge.
In Bohuslän, between Stenungssund and Ljungskile, the E6 runs across Ödsmål valley via the Ödsmåls bridge. With a height of 48 metres and a length of 386 metres, the bridge has been an important part of the 306-kilometre-long road between Kirkenes in Norway and Trelleborg in Sweden.Trafikverket, which manages 21,000 of the country’s bridges, wanted a more efficient and reliable system than the fabric wind socks originally installed on the bridges, which were worn away by strong winds.
Kentima’s partner, Gothenburg-based Trafiksystem Väst AB, is an experienced supplier of traffic equipment and infrastructure. With approximately 65 employees, they possess expert knowledge and always deliver a high level of service, regardless of whether it concerns all or part of a project. Through Trafiksystem, Kentima delivered a solution, with WideQuick HMI Panel as a central part of the system, to Trafikverket.
The system has now been upgraded to digital signs on both sides of the bridge, and in each direction of travel. They display symbols, wind warnings and the direction of the wind, east or west.
Next to the bridge, there is a main equipment cabinet with a WideQuick HMI Panel (H316H). The cabinet is connected to a wind sensor located next to the cabinet, which communicates with Modbus TCP, just like the digital signs. To improve efficiency and avoid having equipment cabinets on each side of the bridge, the signs and cabinets are accessed and communicate via a 4G modem.
"We often work with Kentima’s products and they always work well. The built-in support for Modbus is a clear advantage. It is an incredibly reliable system that is easy to adapt afterwards. Simply put, it is an excellent product,’ says Carl Nilsson, Technical Development Engineer, Trafiksystem Väst AB.
Via the OPC UA interface, information is sent to the Trafikverkets system for information gathering system, enabling Trafikverket to remotely access the desired information. If necessary, Trafikverket can read the same information directly in the WideQuick HMI Panel on site at the bridge.
Since WideQuick HMI/SCADA supports Modbus, it is easy to get a system up and running. Wind data and history are visualised clearly and simply on the panel. The warning is activated by a wind speed of at least 12 metres per second, and the wind speed is reported every minute with the highest measured wind speed during the period. The value must be below 6 metres per second for the warning to be deactivated. The minimum time a warning is active is 10 minutes.
We enjoy working with Kentima’s products and solutions. Both installations and integrations run smoothly, and they also have a fantastically efficient support department with good availability and a high level of expertise. I can’t recommend Kentima highly enough, concludes Carl.
"With WideQuick H316, we get a robust and durable operator panel that meets all our requirements and needs. The HMI panel is extremely reliable, which is essential given its location,’ continues Carl Nilsson.
H300 Compact is a series of fully enclosed operator panels with a sleek and modern design. Each operator panel comes with the design tool WideQuick Designer, which allows the user to quickly and efficiently create the desired user interface. WideQuick OPC Server is included for easy connection of the panel to a superior system.
