WideQuick BMS monitors Kolmården Zoo
The largest park in the Nordic region, Kolmården Zoo, has implemented WideQuick HMI/SCADA software from Kentima to clearly and easily monitor, control and check energy consumption and visualise important functions. Steen IT AB, a partner of Kentima, manages the installations and maintenance of the system.
Kolmården Zoo is located 18 kilometres northeast of Norrköping on the northern shore of Lake Bråviken, about 100 metres above sea level. The park has implemented the software WideQuick with the building automation concept BMS from Kentima to easily monitor, control and visualize important functions and control energy consumption.
Steen IT AB has a unique holistic approach and many years of experience in identifying needs and implementing measures to thereby improve quality and increase efficiency. Their excellence in combination with innovative thinking maintains the ambition to create sustainable solutions with good quality. They deliver everything from complete automation solutions with hardware and software to parts of automation-related projects.
When Kolmården Zoo, with over 700,000 visitors annually, wanted to update its control and monitoring system, WideQuick was chosen after careful evaluation. A decisive factor was the desire to be able to expand smart functions in the future, completely free from limitations. This is evident when everything from moisture levels in flower pots to complete monitoring of the energy systems in the large Wilderness Hotel with spa section can be easily visualised, regardless of who supplied the sub-equipment.
"When expanding the system, an control cabinet with a PLC that communicates with WideQuick is usually instal-led. The cabinet has local intelligence and controls the desired functions. This works extremely well!", says Michael Steen, CEO and Owner, Steen IT AB.
Kolmården Zoo is owned by Parks & Resorts Scandinavia AB, which also owns Gröna Lund, Skara Sommarland and Furuvik. WideQuick has also begun to be implemented in these parks for the same purpose.
The system is being expanded on an on-going basis and is designed to stream-line daily work and increase comfort for animals and visitors. The zoo is built like a small town with hotels, restaurants, lakes, waste collection, shops, offices, animal stables and adapted infrastructure, which places extremely high demands on the superior system.
The access system and cameras at the park gates are also connected to WideQuick. External alarms from, for example, SMHI and E.ON are sent to animal keepers who can bring the animals inside if necessary. The water supply to lakes and moats is logged and monitored to ensure that the specified water levels are not exceeded, and cooling and freezer rooms are connected and logged in a database. Temperature data can be exported and presented to authorities that require it. Data from electricity and water meters is collected so that current voltage and consumption can be read and stored to see consumption during different periods of the year and used to compare against outside temperature and visitor numbers. The data is also used to calculate the energy consumption of the heating, cooling and ventilation systems.
"With the help of WideQuick’s scalability, all important functions are controlled, monitored and visualised. Time-consuming control functions have been eliminated, which has saved us a considerable amount of time and money.", says Jimmy Persson, Head of Energy & Technology, Parks & Resorts Scandinavia AB.
Other important functions controlled via WideQuick BMS include all exterior lighting and lighting in the ape houses, which now consists of a programmed sunrise and sunset for a better environment. WideQuick also keeps track of the number of toilet visits, which are counted and a message is sent to the cleaning staff after a certain number of visits.
